ISTROPOLIS QUINTET was formed at the Bratislava Conservatoire in 1984. Soon after its origin in 1985, the ensemble became the 1st prize winner at the Slovak Chamber Music Competition in Košice. Two years later, in 1987 the ensemble was awarded a honorary prize at the International Music Festival in Banská Bystrica and the 1st prize at the Chamber Music Competition in Bratislava. In 1988, the ensemble won the 1st prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Prague. All members of the ensemble are graduates from the Academy of Music and Drama in Bratislava and most of them also the first players of the Slovak Philharmonic.

ISTROPOLIS QUINTET has made numerous concert performances at home as well as abroad. The ensemble was invited to give concerts at the Bratislava Music Festival, at the International Music Festival in Žilina, at the Košice Musical Spring, at the festival Musica Nobilis, at the MELOS ETHOS contemporary music festival, the New Slovak Music festival and many others. Its recitals were held in Austria, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Japan and Mexico. ISTROPOLIS QUINTET regularly co-operates with the Slovak Radio and Slovak Television companies and with the Austrian ORF – Broadcasting company. The ensemble has made many CD recordings of the world and Slovak repertoire for several recording companies.

The ensemble is primarily a Wind Quintet, but string, drums, piano and harp players are regularly invited to form mixed ensembles. Thanks to that, the concert repertoire of the ISTROPOLIS QUINTET covers a wide range of style periods, from baroque music up to the works of the contemporary music composers.


Pavol KOVÁČ (1946)
Slovak pianist, presently living and performing in Germany. He studied playing the piano at the Conservatoire and Academy of Music and Drama in Bratislava with Rudolf Macudzińský. He took part in many international piano competitions -Bedřich Smetana in the Czech Republic, Pyotr Iľyich Tchaikovsky in Russia, Ferruccio Bussoni in Italy, Interforum in Hungary etc. He has mostly been praised for his performance with the violinist Takeshi Kobayashi at the Japan Art Festival in Tokyo (Japan, 1996) where they were awarded the Critics Prize for rendition of Japan modern composition and Sonata No. 3 in D major by George Enescu. He has released many recordings for radio and television as well as publishing companies. He regularly co-operates with renowned Slovak orchestras. As a soloist, he has given a series of very successful concerts not only in European countries but also in the USA, Cuba, several countries in Asia including Japan. Apart from his concert activities, he has also been active as a teacher, at first in Bratislava (the Academy of Music and Drama), later on in Kuwait (Higher Institute of Music), and currently in Germany (Berufsfachschule fűr Musik des Bezirkes Schwaben).
